Technology We Used

One of technologies we used to shoot our film was this camera, it is called a Canon XM2. Whilst using this camera we were able to learn how to operate the camera and know how the camera worked.

The editing system we used to edit our film was called Corel Pro. Since I had already used this editing system before we had no problems at the start and Josh another member of our group was able to pick up how to work it easily, and helped me show the rest of our group how to use it. When filming we had used a tape to film whilst other groups had used disks as they had problems with Corel, however ours was just fine and we found a variety of editing options and more varied ways of editing our film than the other groups, including music and title sequences.

Final Storyboard

This is the final and completed storyboard for our media piece, we changed the opening sequence to our media piece and then we had to change and re-do the storyboard.

Review Of Filming

When we were filming we had encountered several problems and issues. The first issue that we had encountered when filming was that of a change in cast. This being where the original people who had been cast in our film and had agreed to film with us were no longer able to film with us, as they had other work to do. This meant we had to change who was playing each of our characters and find new people to play them. Even though we had managed to new people to film for our piece, it still took some time that could have been instead used for filming our piece. To avoid this next time we have to make sure that all of the people who agree to film stick by that agreement so we could film on schedule.

Another issue that we had encountered when filming was the locations of the filming. As we had used classrooms for filming we was not sure that next time we went to film the same classroom would be available. So when we filmed we found out that one of the classrooms we needed for filming had a class in it and was unavailable for our use. With this we had to not film the shots that were needed for that classroom and go film something different. To improve this if we did it again we should have selected a classroom that would available when we had lessons when we were filming and should have checked on timetables to see its availability.

A final problem we encountered when filming was the costumes of the characters. We had all decided what costumes our characters were going to wear, but the problem was that when it came to our next filming sessions one of the characters had forgotten that we were meant to be filming that day and did not wear the same outfit as the last time we had filmed. This meant that we could not do any filming that included that character as they did not have the same costume or hairstyle as the previous filming time. To try and avoid this issue the next time, we should have informed our cast the night prior to filming so they knew the next morning they needed to wear the same outfit and hairstyle, so we could continue filming with anymore costume related issues.

Marta's Costume

This is a picture of Marta’s costume four our media piece. The character she plays is the Bank Manager. Her character is of a woman who runs the bank and will not hesitate to do anything that interferes with the good of the bank. She is wearing glasses in her costume as she is to be seen as a woman who is smart and that is usually associated with someone who wears glasses. We have also made her wear this shirt as the shirt is seen as smart attire and somewhat fitting for someone who works as a bank manager. It also fits with that she is wearing trousers with it as the attire is smart business wear. In Marta’s costume she has her hair up which portrays the effect that she is trying to be professional when working and by putting up her hair it does so, she is also wearing some make-up which shows that she is trying to show that she has some authority with what she wears, but also somewhat trying to impress as she is the bank manager. We tried to make it seem realistic that she works at a bank as the manager because just by glancing at her costume you can see that she is dressed smartly and is someone who is obviously working as a professional and shows that through what she wears.

Draft Re-Done Script

These are the draft re-done storyboad's that we did and have now written up:

Terminology

These are some key terminology that we use:

Media Synergy: This is the way in which different elements of a media conglomerate work together to promote linked products across different media. Synergy works when different elements within amedia conglomerate promote each other (e.g. film studios, record label, video game division) and create linked products. For example DISNEY - High School Musical: Disney Outlets, Films, Soundtrack and Merchandise.
New technologies support this process - the web, dvd, downloading. Media institutions exploit various platforms to sell various products related to oen film, e.g film and soundtrack.

Convergence: This is the process by hich a range of media platforms are integrated within a single piece of media technology. For example the new XBOX 360 is a games console, a DVD player and an internet model. The iPhone is also a phone, a camera, a video camera, an mp3 player, an FM radio, a games console, a web browser and a palmtop computer.
Media institutions recognise that audiences enjoy using converged technology, want to consume media in a variety of ways and provide short term content for downloading, e.g. video clips, trailers, music videos, jingles, wallpapers and music tracks, etc.

Advertising/Marketing:
  • Word of mouth
  • Posters (teaser and main)
  • Trailers
  • Merchandising
  • Online and digital marketing
  • Social network media
  • Film premiers
Above the Line Marketing: Marketing funded as part of a project (posters, trailers and magazine spreads)
Below the Marketing: Marketing which is free but can generate interest (online and free publicity)

Conglomerate - A multi-industry company. Conglomerates are often large for example 21st century fox
Media Ownership - What large companies own

The Film Chain

The film chain consists of three stages: Production, Distribution and Exhibition.

Production: Getting rights to a film and the funding to shoot it. Making sure a script is put together as well as having actors, locations abd every aspect of the filming process organised.

Distribution: The process if selling the product to audiences, via cinemas, retailers and rental films. Marketing the film is very important. Making sure there is a deal with the cinemas so they can show your films to the public.

Exhibition: The cinemas which screen the film for the general public.

Film Companies

There are two types of film companies, one being conglomerate and the other being independent film companies. A conglomerate is, by definition, a large company that consists of divisions of seemingly unrelated businesses. An example of a conglomerate is Vivendi, they own Universal Studios, Canal+ and also own the film company Working Title Films. The other type of film company is an independent film company. They are a film company that will make all films by themselves with no backing from a conglomerate, they will go to film production companies with their films and try to get them to in a way sponor their film so they can get it made. An example of an independent film company is Ruby Films or Zebra Films.

Mise-En-Scene

Mise-en-scene is a term used to describe the design aspects of a film or theatre production. It is a French term meaning "What is put into a scene of frame." Mise-en-scene inclucdes lighting, colour, costume, make-up, settings and props, facial expressions and positioning of characters in the shot.

Lighting and Colour is the use of lighting in the scene. For example in our thriller film we will mostly be using natural lighting in all the scenes, but there will be some dim lighting for when other charcters introduce themselves. Colour is used to represent emotions but can also prepresent feelings, for example in romantic movies they will use colours like pink and red because they mostly reflect love  and passion as that is what they want to project to the audience.

Settings and Props is the use of setting in the film where it can help relate to the genre of the film and also how props helps the audience guess what type of genre it is. For example in thrillers the settings will most likely be unknown places or typically a abandoned house or any scary setting in general. The props help where it could for example be guns and bombs, which can help the audience know that the film is going to be an action film.

Facial Expressions where by looking at the expressions of any characters in the film can help the audience know what type of film it will be. For example if the characters are oftenly smiling or have a happy facial expression, if could help the audience know it could be a comedy film as other films like horror or thriller will rarely have quite a lot of laughter and smiling.

Positioning of characters help the audience know who could be some antagonists or how could be protagonists, for example protagonists will usually be in the middle of the shot or in the middle or the scene as they are the most important charcters of the scene.

Final Cast And Crew

This is the final list of people cast in film and who filmed them:

Bank Manager - Marta
Banker - Greg
Greed - Maisie
Sloth - Lewis
Pride - Josh
Camera Woman - Catherine (Me)

Final Title Sequence Design And Logo

These are the final designs which we came up with and have used in our opening title sequence.:

Team Wildfyre Logo Design Ideas

These are a cariety of different logo designs that all members of our group had come up with but we decided on one final one.

Title Sequence Draft Designs

These are draft images of pictures that we could use in our title sequence. They all have the same two colours black and white to show contrast and showing a theme of contrast.

Maisie's Costume

This is an image of Maisie's costume, in our film she had played the charcter Greed. We had decided to have Maisies costume like this because it is seen as smart but also a bit casual. We had had dressed her in a blazer and also trouser as we wanted to portray her as looking smart to the audience. we needed her to be dressed like tis because she needed to look important to the audience and also she was going to meet the Bank Manager in our film so she had also needed to look presentable to the Bank Manager and also to the audience. She is wearing a necklace with what loooks like jewels or something similar, which can portray her personality as the jewellery will cost a bit of money and she is greedy person and this is shown with her love of expensive jewellery. As Maisie is wearing long trousers and looks buisiness smart, she could be easily mistaken for one of the staff of the bank and thus would be able to move around the bank easily without causing any suspicion as she looks like she works at the bank.

Another Film With Same Name

Today whilst we were on Google looking for ideas for our opening title sequence, we had found another film that had the same name as ours. We asked teachers if its okay to have the same name and they said it was okay so we decided to keep our name the same but decided to look into the film to see if its similar to our film.
The film we had dsicovered was callled 1 out of 7. This is the promotional poster for their film:
The film was about a runaway teen called Lexi who had found herself alone and pregnant on the streets. Seemingly beyond hope, she must turn to Devon, a woman with her own demons, to help her find a way back from her past mistakes. This film 1 out of 7 had been released in 2011.
With this we had found out that even though the film had the same name as ours, it had a completely different storyline to ours. We had also found it was released by in independent film company like ours where we had made our film by ourself.

Shot Types

My group decided to do some research into different types of shot that are commonly used in films and to see if they could give us any ideas for shot types to use in our film piece.

This is an image of Long Shot and it is looking down a long corridor. Long shots are mainly used when showing the whole body of a person, e.g. from head to toe. It shows the audience more in the scene and giving them a bigger image.

This is an image of an Extreme Long Shot and it is looking into a large field. These shots are mostly used as an establishing shot at the start of the film to give the audience a sense of the locations which the film is set in and maybe a hint to what type of genre the film may be.

This is an image of a medium shot. They are mostly used when showing what a person looks like, it is a shot where it is from the below the shoulders and up.

This is an image of a close up. They are mostly used to show the emotion and/or any reaction they are having and you can see it on the persons face. They also can be used when doing a close up on a object to see what it is.

This is an image of a birds eye view shot. It gives an elevtaed or aerial view or the object, it gives a perception as you are looking from a birds perspective. It mostly used when giving shots or buildings or a over view of a location, it allows the viewer to see what type of location the film will be set in.

This a extreme close-up. These types of shots are used to intensify one certain feature of something, wether it be part of the body or a part of an object.

This is an low angle shot. They mostly used to show how powerful someone is, it can make the viewer or the charcter feel small as the other person is above them and is seen as powerful and mighty.

This is an image of a over the shoulder shot. They are mostly used in films when two people are having a conversation. They are used to show one of the persons expression of their face throughout the conversation.

This is a point of view shot. These types of shots are used in the charcaters point of view. It allows the audience to see what it is like through the charcaters eyes, it could give teh audience a chance to know what it is like to be that character.

This is an high angle shot. These types of shots are mostly used in films when the film is trying to portray someone as being small or weak. it can make the scenes more dramatic as it seems there is someone who is seen as weak to someone who is seen as strong.

Music Used Throughout Our Film

Unlike any normal thriller film that you can see in the cinemas which contain music in their film or opening sequence, or film is unlike them. We had decided that we will not use any music throughout our film piece. We as a group had decided to do so because prior to this we had done so research and tried to find any music that could fit into our film piece, we had found this a difficult task to do, so as a group we decided not to use any as there was nothing we deemed suitable for our film, but the film still works well without any  music in our film and still gives a sense a enigma throughout the film.

Editing Day 6

Today when editing were were finalising our editing and film just in time for our deadline which is early next week. One member of our group Josh worked on and created an opening title sequence for our production company which is Team Wildfyre and one for our actual film which is called One our of 7. We had decided that we were going to add our real names into the title sequence of our film, for example it would have Maisie Long starring as Greed.

Whilst some members of our group was working on editing our film piece, myself and Maisie were doing something different. We were re-doing the script and storyboard for our film piece. Since we had changed the opening shots for our film sequence we decided we needed to change the script and storyboard for it to make sense. We spent the lesson doing so, Maisie working on the script whilst I was working on the storyboard.

Finished And Re-Done Script

This is the final completed version of our script. Since we changed the opening shots of our piece we had to do the script and storyboards again and this is the final script:

Scene 1
INT. SIN CITY. DAY

The film opens to a long shot of the bank manager shouting at the banker then panning into the corridor where he passes greed on the way. There is a long shot of Greed walking down the corridor into the bank and she stops outside a door and the bank managers voice becomes audible.

Bank Manager (in a raised voice):

This is an outrage! You are one of our best employees, how can you do this?

Banker (calmly):

I’m sorry, but I can’t stand for this level of corruption.

Bank manager (Shouting)

GET OUT!!!

The banker then sullenly leaves the room and into the corridor as he walks past Greed it goes to a shot of them at eye level and then they continue walking until Greed reaches the door and proceeds to knock on the door.

Bank Manager

Come in.

Greed proceeds to enter the room.

Greed

You called me Madam?

Bank Manager

Yes. I have a job for you; did you see the banker walking out just now? I want him gone. You don’t need to know why and I don’t need to know the means, just remove him.

Greed

Yes ma’am, I’m on it.

Greed proceeds to leave the room and shots of corridors as greed walks out.

Scene 2

INT. OFFICE IN SIN CITY. DAY.

Greed class the other 6 in a conference call all the audience can see is two characters and they are left to distinguish the others.

Pride

Yes, what is it?

Greed

I have a job for us.

Greed

We need to assassinate a banker as discreetly as possible I will give you the information as soon as I am back at HQ.

Pride

Ok then, Sloth get information on him, I want everything, what he eats, where he sleeps, aliases, weaknesses, the works.

Sloth (sleepily)

Yeah, whatever.

Pride

Good, as for everyone else; first to kill him gets the majority of the prize, or in this case a rather large cash sum. This needs to be a quick and painless operation.

Filming Stills

These are stills of myself filming other members of the group with our video camera and myself also setting up the camera:

Editing Day 5

Today we contiuned editing our media piece. Today we focused on the sound and volume of our piece. We focused mainly on changing the volume throughout the film, as in some bits the sound was very loud as the character was shouting and in another scene another character was talking but you could only just hear it as it was very quiet. So we changed the volume of the piece to be the same volume all the way through and so you are able to hear all of the charcters speaking throughout it.

This is a still image of two of the memebers of our group Josh and Greg currently working on editing our film piece. They were sorting out the sound of the scenes making sure that it was not too loud or too quiet. They were unware that they had their picture taken until we showed them the picture.

Editing Day 4

Today we had finished filming all of the extra parts for our film. Next we logged onto our computer and started to upload the new footage to Corel and only managed to edit for a short amount of time as it was coming near to the end of the lesson but we decided to put the new footage on the computer as we did not want to lose any valuable footage.

Editing Day 3

Today we had shown our edited film footage to our class teacher to see if there is anything we could change to our film or if we needed to add any shots. We were told by our teacher to film more close ups and film more close ups. We complied by our teachers request and went off to film the extra parts but could not film them all as they did not have the right people but will film all the parts next time.

Editing Day 2

Today was our second day of editing our film and now that every person in our group had become accustomed to the editing system we were able to start editing our film confidently with the entire group being able to contribute and use the Corel editing software with ease.

Editing Day 1

Today we had started to edit our film. Today we uploaded our first bits of footage onto our computer. As I was the only person in our group had ever used the editing system before, which was Corel, I had helped to show our group how to work the editing system and guide them in what to do.

Filming Day 6

Today we informed our actors that we once again needed their assistance with our film and that we had to film them again. They all complied to do and we starting filming the close ups and mid shots that we were told to film to make our film that extra bit better. We managed to film all of the necessary shots and with that we have now completed all of our filming. Next we shall upload our new shots and footage to our computer and start to edit our film once again.

Filming Day 5

Today we had uploaded all of our necessary footage to our computer and began to edit. We had our teacher come and look at our work and see how we could improve or if we needed to add any more shots. We were told to add more close ups to our film and a few mid shots. With this we start to film one close up but we could not film it all as we did not have the appropriate costumes on and the people there to film.

Filming Day 4

Today was our fourth and final day of filming. Today we had managed to complete all of the filming that we needed to do and found necessary for our film. As we finished near the end of the lesson we are going to upload our footage to our computer next lesson and start editing.

Filming Day 3

On our third day of filming it was just as successful as the first. All of the actors were wearing the same costumes as they wore the previous time’s we were filming. We managed to finish filming our first scene and now only had to finish filming a few more parts to finish scene two.

Filming Day 2

Today we had our second day of filming. It was not as successful as the previous time we filmed. When filming today we had once issue which was one of the actresses had not worn the same costumes as she was wearing the previous time we had filmed, this meant we could not film any parts that included her but instead we filmed some different parts. We also managed to learn how to fully use our video camera and film and the necessary scenes with ease.

Filming Day 1

Today we did our first day of filming. The filming at first was successful in some aspects and in other aspects not as much. It was successful for us where the actors we had for the filming required had all their appropriate clothing and props, they also helped with full cooperation when we filmed different parts. However what was not so good was on the first day of filming was we was unsure and had difficulty on filming a few parts with the camera, but we managed to overcome and film all that we could.

Props Used In Our Film

Throughout our piece we used different props to make our film to seem more realistic. This is the set of props which we used in our media piece:

These are pictures of the phones which were used throughout the piece when the characters were on the phone and conversing with one another. The blue phone was used by Sloth in our film. The iPhone was used by Greed and the Nokia was used by the leader of the group Pride.

This is an image of the computer one of the characters was working on before they received a call. The character Pride was working on the computer that can be seen below:
